Maggie (in progress)

I was so excited after I cut my strips for my most recent quiltalong, I decided to go ahead and sew the top together. Here's the top, from two different angles. It's going to be about a twin size, I think, which will be perfect for the little girl it's going to. As you can see, my lovely assistant Cassidy approves. My blocks are 12.5" square, and it is 5 blocks across by 7 blocks down. I have a couple of stray ones for the back. How should I quilt it? I'm kind of thinking straight lines, but I'm unsure how many or where. This was such a fast top to put together, which was a nice break for me!

  1. Beautiful! I love how it looks like a basket weave. I would have loved to do that quilt a long too, but have too many things going on right now. As for quilting it... I'm at a loss. If you do straight lines, would you go through the pieces that are adjacent (so parallel to some seams, perpendicular to others)? Or just mirror the seam lines .25" away...

  2. Very feminine, pretty quilt! Your assistant is adorable!

I would choose feathers. My Mom once gave me something with a similar design to quilt for her, and the vertical like rows of feathers I did were a really subtle contrast to all the straight lines. There's always stitch in the ditch, of course...or a block by block motif. I would stay away from loose meandering, which doesn't work well for something like this, but I see it all the time. It detracts from the piecing without adding any visual interest. If you add any kind of curved lines to a design with a strong straight line emphasis such as this, they need to add some visual interest (like a feather or motif), or it just looks messy.

  3. Oh, it looks great!! I was a bit behind, so I'm only just starting to sew my strips together. I think I'm going to end up with 7 x 6 blocks, not sure. No idea how I'm going to quilt it. I've never quilted a twin-size before, so I'm a little intimidated! Can't wait to hear what you decide, and see what you do with the back!

  4. Wow you're really fast! I've been busting my butt to cut my strip pieces into squares. I like your fabric choice. As for quilting...I would stick with straight lines...just because there are so many rectangles on this piece, you wouldn't want it to get too busy with overpowering quilt lines.

  8. Beautiful! I'm in the quilt a long too and it's my first quilt. I don't know how I'll end up quilting it yet. The stippling machine quilting will be way too much for me to tackle on a full size quilt. I've been experimenting on a placement and it's fun, but can't imagine doing it on a huge piece.
Can't wait to see what you do!
